Theories in counseling gives future counselors the overall view of theories and why they are important. Theories serve as a guide for counselors and give justification for treatment given. A lack of theory would make it hard for a counselor to connect with their client and know what methods to use for a specific client. Theories sets the tone of how a counselor can affect change in their client’s life. As a school counselor you would be dealing with children with different types personalities and behaviors. By being aware of the different theories it would make it easier to cater to each individual. Cognitive-Behavior Theory Cognitive-behavioral theories are described as a set of related theories, which have evolved over time. There isn’t real definition of cognitive-behavioral theory. Both theories are tied together by similarities and techniques strategies. Cognitive Behavior theories maintain their role in which cognitions play in behavior and personalities. Cognitive-behavioral techniques target both cognitive and behavioral problems with the use of cognitive and behavioral strategies. Aaron T. Beck defined cognitive therapy as an active, directive, and structured approach used to treat various psychiatric disorders (Beck, et,al, 1979 p.3). Aaron T.
